It’s a warm day in May, and I’m at the last gymnastics class of the season at my local gym. I’m a middle-aged mom of three about to attempt a back handspring, by myself, for the first time in my life. I feel what I can only describe as electric shocks of bravery pulsing through my body. I’m invincible. My coach reminds me that I’m ready, and I finally believe her. Physically empowered like never before, I stand tall atop the incline mat and plant my feet in the center. I steady my eager body, deliberately raise my arms, and jump.
